Arsenal Fc is in no doubt one of the best teams in London and England as a whole. They were the first team from London to reach the finals of the champions league; although they lost to Barcelona.

They are also the third team aside Manchester United and Liverpool with more league titles. As we speak Arsenal has 13 league titles and a record 14 FA Cup trophies.

Not only this, the club holds the record for going 49 games unbeaten; thus wining the league in the process.

Quick history

Year Founded

A group of young men came together to form Arsenal Fc in 1886. The club was initially under the name Dial Square. Each member of the group decided to pay sixpence with leader David Danskin adding three shillings. Together they formed Arsenal Football Club.

Now after the formation, the club played their first recorded match against Eastern Wanderers; on the 11 of December 1886. Arsenal won by 6-0 and soon afterwards changed their name from Dial Square to royal Arsenal.

Turning Professional

The problem with being a smaller club is that big teams will try to poach your best players. Arsenal faced exactly that. At the time they where a small club and big teams tried to sign their players on professional contracts. To counter this, the club sought professionalism in 1893.

To the club’s disappointment, the proposal to become a professional team was turned down. As a result the club was banned from competing in local games by the London Football Association. Arsenal at this point only played friendly matches.

They tried creating their own equivalent of the football league but this move also failed. The club’s future was uncertain. Luckily the London Football Association decided to lift the ban placed on them. And by so doing, they were placed in the second division of the Football League.

Playing in the Football League essentially made them the first southern team to participate. At this point they were no longer called Royal Arsenal but Woolwich Arsenal.

Highbury stadium

Arsenal’s move to a new stadium was initiated by new club chairman Sir Henry Norris. He came in to solve Arsenal’s debt issues. With that sorted ,he wanted a way to generate income for the club using gate fees.

Sir Norris at the time also owned Fulham, so he decided to merge both clubs but the merger wasn’t successful. He then decided to seek a new ground and build a stadium for Arsenal. Sir Norris invested approximately £125,000 (equivalent to £12,575,019 in 2020) in the completion of the stadium.

The Stadium served as Arsenal’s playing ground from 1913 till 2006.

First Division Promotion and Controversies

Arsenal where promoted to first Division Football in 1919, but this came in a somewhat controversial manner. With the first Division being expanded from 20 to 22; the two slots available should have been given to Chelsea and Tottenham as they where already being relegated from the first Division.

But instead, the slot was rather given to Chelsea and Arsenal by the AGM of the football league. Arsenal’s new owner Sir Norris argued to the AGM board that Arsenal had much more history than Tottenham; and as such should be promoted to the first Division.

The AGM liked his submission and voted for Arsenal to be promoted to the first Division. This infuriated the Tottenham base fueling the rivalry we know of today.

Chapman Appointment

Chapman was lured from Huddersfield Town to Arsenal by the board. He was offered a mouthwatering salary he couldn’t turn down. His appointment came with many positive changes at Arsenal. He encouraged the club to start adding numbers at the back of the jerseys and also added white sleeves to the already red jerseys.

With Arsenal generating more funds from gate proceeds, he brought in quality players. Although he didn’t win anything in his first season, he ended up winning five League titles and two FA Cups. Sadly he passed away in 1934 due to pneumonia.
