‘I’ve never seen that before’: Arteta praises Arsenal fans for their reaction to Saliba’s own goal

Following William Saliba’s own goal, Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta praised the Arsenal supporters.

The defender was praised last week for his man-of-the-match performance on his Arsenal debut against Crystal Palace, but he struggled against Leicester on Saturday.

With Arsenal leading, Saliba’s poor attempt to head a Leicester cross behind instead beat Aaron Ramsdale and nestled inside the near post for an own goal.

Instead of lamenting the error, Arsenal fans cheered and applauded the defender, which Arteta noticed.

He told reporters:

What [the fans] did with Saliba after the own goal is something I’ve never seen anything like that in my career.

I think it lifted Willy’s confidence. I’m more happy today [with Saliba] than I was last week with Palace because of how he reacted to the own goal.
