This is the story of Ghana’s Baba Sule. If not for injuries and illness he would have been amongst the best midfielders Ghana has ever produced.

Sule caught the attention of numerous scouts with his performances during the 1995 U17 world cup in Ecuador. He even scored the winner against Brazil in the final to hand Ghana the trophy ( FT:3-2).

He said In an interview with TV3

That year was a memorable year for me. Anytime we talk about 1995, it brings a lot of memories. That year was very great for that group of U-17, we won the cup.

Spanish club Real Mallorca signed him up but instead of spring boarding his career, the move rather turned out to be the beginning of his misery. At Mallorca he played less games as a result of illness.

Sule was diagnosed with hepatitis B which nearly forced Mallorca into terminating his contract. He pleaded with the club to allow him treat the illness in Ghana. The club obliged, Sule came back to Ghana and got treated.

Upon getting back to Spain, he was loaned out to lower tier side Ourense, where he enjoyed football once again. He came to life showing aggressiveness and persistence in his games.

As a result, Real Madrid decided to sign him as an understudy to ageing Claude Makelele. Although he signed for Madrid in 1999, Baba Sule never made his Real Madrid debut rather, he was sent out on loan at Leganes.

At leganes he played consistently and got great form. Real Madrid then decided to call him back from loan to field him in the first team. Real Madrid’s coach at the time, Vincente Del Bosque set-up a trial match. Sule wasn’t lucky as he injured himself during the trial match.

Real Madrid were preparing to go to Japan for the pre-season. Before that, things were going better for me in Leganes. So, they wanted to take me to Japan, so they sent Vincente Del-Bosque, who was the sports director of the junior side was present to watch my match.

That very match was like a test for me and if I’m able to do well. So, it was in that very match that I got my injury.

And then the Ghanaian met David de Gea, then a young Atletico talent. David did not yet have a driver’s license; but then the club found a reliable driver and football midfielder, Babu Sule.

He was very shy, but we did well. During the trip, I learned the phrases in English. I had a great time with De Gea and his family. We are still in touch, we recently communicated with David’s mother in a conversation.

Now 43, Soula has been with Fuenlabrada, a second-tier Spanish club, for several years. His new tasks are to collect balls, clean boots, wash uniforms.
