Daria Kasatkina, Russia’s top-ranked women’s tennis player, revealed she is dating a woman in a video released yesterday.
The French Open semifinalist’s remarks come as Russia’s parliament considers tightening already-strict restrictions on public discussions about LGBTQ relationships.

Kasatkina, 25, said ‘yes’ when asked if she has a girlfriend in an interview with Russian blogger Vitya Kravchenko on YouTube.
Soon after the interview was published, Kasatkina shared an Instagram photo of herself embracing Olympic silver medalist figure skater Natalia Zabiiako, 27, with a heart emoji and referred to Zabiiako as “my cutie pie” on Twitter.

Zabiiako, who was born in Estonia and won an Olympic medal with the Russian team in 2018, shared the same photo on Instagram, complete with a heart.

Kasatkina became emotional at the end of her interview with Kravchenko yesterday, when he asked if she was afraid to return to her homeland.
Yes I have thought about it. There are many subjects that are even more important than it that are banned, so it’s no surprise.
Living in the closet as they say is pointless. Until you choose to come out. Of course it’s up to you how to do it and how much to tell.
Living in peace with yourself is the only thing that matters.
