Arsenal have been in desperate need of a ‘better’ defensive midfielder since club veteran Patrick Vieira left.

The closest they came to replacing him was when they signed Thomas Partey from Atlético de Madrid in 2020.

Though Rice commands a high price and has drawn interest from a number of clubs, multiple sources say that Arsenal are the frontrunners to sign him.

Hillier stated, via TBR:

“We need players who are good enough to have a statue outside the Emirates. We were lucky me and Kev, we had Tony, Wrighty and Dennis, we had those there. Those are the players we need and Declan Rice is one of them.”
