Tavares joined Arsenal from Benfica in the summer of 2021 for a reported £8 million. He struggled in his first season at Arsenal, looking defensively vulnerable at times.
The most notable instance was when he was substituted during the first half of their FA Cup loss to Nottingham Forest. With the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko at Arsenal this summer, it was decided that Tavares would be loaned out.

The 22-year-old joined Marseille, where William Saliba honed his skills prior to his Arsenal debut. So far, he’s performed admirably for the Ligue 1 side, earning praise from Igor Tudor.
He said this ahead of their game against Ajaccio this weekend:
“Tavares is a good guy. A bit timid off the pitch. He’s quick. He still needs to improve things, like his final ball, or make better choices. If he can do that, he’ll be one of the best in the world in his role.”
