Following Arsenal’s efforts to pursue Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer, Albert Sambi Lokonga has insisted that he is not afraid of competition.

Lokonga made 24 appearances in his first season with Mikel Arteta’s team after moving to Arsenal from Anderlecht last year in a £17.2 million transfer.

The 22-year-old made very few appearances for the Arsenal in the second half of the previous campaign, and Arteta is reportedly eager to sign a new central midfielder before the transfer window shuts.

Arsenal has shortlisted Tielemans but have not made an offer to Leicester City for the Belgian international.

Asked about rumors that Arsenal was considering bringing in a new midfielder, Lokonga responded on the Counter Attack Podcast (via Metro) as follows:

I try to not pay attention to all of that stuff. When you play for a big club, people have expectations, yeah, you need to buy this player, or, this player is rubbish, for me I just focus on myself and focus on my job.

If I was scared of competition I would not have chosen Arsenal. Coming here I knew there would be competition, at my previous club there was competition as well so it’s part of football. I think competition can make you better.
