On this day in 2010, Uruguay reached the semi finals of the world cup for the first time since 1970 largely thanks to Luiz suarez.

Ghana were certain to be amongst the last four during the 2010 world cup until Luis Suarez handled a goal bound effort on the line. He saw red but the subsequent penalty was missed by record goal scorer for Ghana, Asamoah Gyan. It was the last kick of the game.

Gyan had previously netted from the spot in two previous matches and was booming with confidence. But his effort skimmed across the crossbar, although he sent the keeper the wrong way.

The game went into penalties where Asamoah Gyan, looking to make amends for his earlier miss, decided to take the first spot kick for Ghana, of which he converted.

However John Mensah and Dominic Adiyiah both missed theirs for Ghana, there by sending Uruguay to the semi finals, having won 4-2 on penalties.

It would have been the first time an African country had made it to the semi finals of a world cup.
