Mikel Arteta chose to rest his first team and instead used his second string players. Arsenal took the lead through Eddie Nketia, who was assisted by Reiss Nelson.
However, new goalkeeper Karl Hein made a costly error, allowing Brighton to equalize. He slipped and fouled Welbeck as he attempted to claim the ball.

Welbeck scored from the penalty spot to tie the game at one. Brighton then scored twice after the break to make the score 3-1.
