Sporting CP eliminated Arsenal from the Europa League on penalties (5-3) last night. The outcome has left a sour taste in the mouths of Gooners who had hoped for a ‘double’.

Despite the disappointing result, the Gunners can now focus solely on the Premier League, and history favours them to win it.

Going back in time to 2011/12, Manchester City went all the way to win their first EPL in 44 years under Roberto Mancini after suffering an upset in the third round of the Europa League.

The citizens were eliminated by Portuguese club Sporting via the away goals rule after the match ended 3-3 on aggregate. Match results here.

This was the exact same scoreline played out last night at the Emirates between Arsenal and Sporting. The Gunners would have qualified if the away goals rule had still been in effect.
